The Canadian presence at WOMEX, the European world music expo where thousands of musicians, managers, presenters, agents, journalists and fans from around the world meet to share resources, do business and listen to a whole lot of fantastic music, will be greater than ever this year.

Montreal, August 22, 2016 - Santiago de Compostela will enjoy a major Canadian invasion October 19-23 this year! After many years of research and development in the planning stages and favourable negotiations with a variety of partners, Mundial Montreal is coming into its own at the grand expo of world music, WOMEX. With 6 Canadian bands performing, dozens of Canadian delegates and more professional activities than ever, Canada is establishing itself as a major international player in world music and cultural diversity with its largest participation to date at WOMEX.
This year, Mundial Montreal, North America’s world music summit, is providing vision and leadership for the strong Canadian delegation. Mundial Montreal is pulling resources together for the community and strengthening the Canadian position in the global market, making the most of available opportunities.
The Music
The heart of Mundial Montreal’s initiative is showcasing some of the hottest world music talents in Canada, thus Mundial Montreal in collaboration with CIMA (Canadian Independent Music Association), will take over the Salón Teatro offWOMEX stage to present 3 bands on Friday, October 21. The night will feature world-class Chadian a cappella group H’Sao, Mexican MC innovator Boogat pushing Latin music beyond hip-hop and electronica, plus eclectic singer-songwriter Quique Escamilla, hailing from Chiapas.
In an effort to consolidate the Canadian/Quebec presence, Mundial Montreal has banded with Folquébec, experts in Québec trad/folk/world, who will host Spotlight on Québec and present Les Tireux d’Roches in an offWOMEX showcase. Rounding out the Canadian artists showcasing at WOMEX are the official juried selection The East Pointers, as well as Mundial Montreal alumni Kobo Town, who will be backing up the legendary Calypso Rose in celebration of her WOMEX award.
The Networking
Building on this extensive showcase component will be a range of networking activities aimed at developing relations between Canada and the world. Mundial Montreal is organizing activities as well as coordinating with other Canadian partners to achieve a maximum impact for our community. Mundial Montreal will partner with CIMA to facilitate their presence and offer focused and productive participation in WOMEX for CIMA participants.
Holding its inaugural session at WOMEX on Thursday, October 20, the World Routes Network is an initiative created by Mundial Montreal whose mandate is to inform, represent, advocate and provide services to its members, composed of presenters from across Canada, plus North America interested in showcasing world music. The network is emerging from the 5 years of intensive Presenter Meetings held at Mundial Montreal.
Additional activities will be held highlighting the Canadian presence includigin a World Trad Forum Network Meeting led by Folquébec, highlighting masters of the Quebec tradition of oral culture with its French origins in song and story, and convergence with Scottish and Irish influences.
Mundial Montreal is extremely proud to be so deeply involved in the Canadian delegation at WOMEX and to collaborate closely with a variety of industry stakeholders to make a profound impact for Canadian world music.
